TROUBLED retailer Comet could shut its call centre on the outskirts of Clevedon under a merger plan.
Two weeks ago workers at the company's main customer support office in Windmill Road, Kenn, were told that around 150 jobs at the centre were to go.
Now it has been revealed that the call centre could be merged with another Comet centre in Hull, with one of the sites closing and the other escaping the axe.
The company has not yet decided which centre is to stay open. After the previously-announced redundancies come into effect, both will employ about 300 people.
Comet yesterday launched a 90-day consultation into the plans.
Chief executive Bob Darke said: "In a phenomenally tough climate, significant savings are required to secure the long-term survival of our business.
"In no way should this be seen as a reflection of the commitment and efforts of our employees and we'll make every effort to help those ultimately affected to find alternative employment."
The job losses already announced at Clevedon represent around a third of the 450 redundancies made since the electrical retailer was sold for a nominal fee of £2 earlier this month.
It was bought by a firm of private investors called OpCapita and the new owners have already begun the process of making "significant savings" to save it from collapse.
Comet has been hit hard by the downturn, with sales falling 14.5 per cent in the past three months.
