Children take close look at plight of native crayfish

CHILDREN from across the city are learning about the plight of endangered UK crayfish at a series of new school roadshows.

The Crayfish in Crisis roadshow highlights freshwater ecology and conservation with a focus on the plight of the native white-clawed crayfish, which Bristol Zoo is working hard to conserve.

So far ten schools have signed-up for a year-long programme of education sessions carried out by Bristol Zoo as part of its involvement in the South West Crayfish Partnership.

One of the first roadshows took place at St Katherine's School in Ham Green, North Somerset, where youngsters took part in a range of aquatic-themed games.

They also got the chance to have a go at some activities which taught them about how they could make a difference and help protect their local waterways.

Games included a large 3D foam river with interactive team games, aquatic invertebrate identification and the opportunity to see a live North American signal crayfish.
