Can heroes of 1966 help Dave reach £10k target?

A FLOWER show and charity auction at a Thornbury pub on Saturday, July 21, is hoping to raise enough money to reach a five-year target of £10,000 for charity.

Dave Cox, landlord of The Anchor Inn at Lower Morton, began organising money-raising events for Meningitis UK after being persuaded to support the charity's founder Steve Dayman on a sponsored run.

The flower show will resurrect an event which used to be held at the pub during the 1960s and 70s. A marquee will be erected for the entries.

Thornbury is one of the finalists in this year's Britain in Bloom contest.

Two signed photos – one of Geoff Hurst scoring the winning goal in the 1966 World Cup final and Gordon Banks' "save of the century" against Pele in Mexico, 1970 – will be sold at the auction which starts at 6pm.

The pub is holding its annual bike ride to raise funds for the charity on Saturday, July 14.

The eight-mile route includes stops at a number of pubs.
