Bristol Rovers boss John Ward secures loan deal for Millwall goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall

Bristol Rovers boss John Ward has moved to solve a goalkeeper shortage by securing a deal to sign Steve Mildenhall from Milwall.

Experienced stopper Mildenhall, 34, has agreed a short-term loan deal initially - but is expected to extend until the end of the season.

His arrival temporarily solves a problem area for Ward, who is without senior stopper Scott Bevan because of injury and also loses Sam Walker, who returns to Chelsea at the end of his six-month loan deal tomorrow.

Experienced Mildenhall, 33, who is expected to make his debut in tomorrow's clash against Plymouth Argyle at the Memorial Stadium (1pm) has made over 300 league appearances since starting his career at Swindon over 15 years ago.

He has also played for  Notts County, Oldham Athletic, Grimsby Town, Yeovil Town and Southend United and Bristol Rovers manager Ward said: "We are delighted to have a goalkeeper with Steve's experience on board. His arrival is not, in any way, a reflection on Sam Walker, who did very well for me at Aldershot on Wednesday.

"However, given our current league position, I felt that we needed some experience in that position. I know Steve and I am grateful to his manager at Millwall, Kenny Jackett, for allowing him to join us."

Bristol Rovers Chairman Nick Higgs added: "I'm very pleased that we have signed an experienced goalkeeper and look forward to Steve playing for us for the remainder of the season."
