SURELY something better can be done for Mike Coles and his wife, Lilian. For here are a devoted couple who, through no fault of their own, have spent the past 12 months living apart.
After 50 years of marriage that would be a traumatic adjustment to make for any couple.
But it is made worse because they thought they would be moving to a flat adapted for Mr Coles' disability only for all their hopes to be dashed.
Their story is not one of blame and accusation but more of sadness, separation and growing desperation.
They do not seem to be an unreasonable couple.
Mrs Coles has once put their home on the market and is willing to move.
And after half a century together it must be heartbreaking for them to be forced to live apart.
This is a situation where someone needs simply to put themselves in Mr and Mrs Coles' situation and apply a little logic and kindness.
For however you look at it they seem to have been either inadvertently misled or badly let down.
This situation needs to be considered again and then every avenue explored to try to bring Mr and Mrs Coles back together under the same roof.
As a society it is the very least we should try to do for them.
